In the churchyard of St Pancras Old Church, dozens of Victorian gravestones stand stacked in tight, overlapping rings — moved here in the 1860s when a railway line cut through part of the burial ground, under the supervision of a young architecture assistant named Thomas Hardy, who later became one of England's best-known novelists. The ash tree that grew up through the stones and gave the site its name has since fallen, but the stacked graves themselves remain one of London's strangest and most photographed quiet corners.
It's a brief, atmospheric stop, best combined with a wider walk through King's Cross and Camden.
