Charles Dickens Museum
About This Tour
At 48 Doughty Street in Camden stands the Georgian terraced house Charles Dickens rented from March 1837 to December 1839 — the only one of his London homes still standing. It was here, in his mid-twenties and already the author of Pickwick Papers, that he wrote Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby.
The rooms are set out much as they would have been in his day, giving a genuinely intimate sense of the writer behind the novels — a good half-day stop for literature lovers, and one we're happy to combine with a wider look at Bloomsbury and King's Cross.
Tour Highlights
- Dickens's only surviving London home, preserved as it was in his day
- Where he wrote Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby
- An intimate, uncrowded museum compared to London's larger institutions
- Combines well with a walk through Bloomsbury
