A First-Timer's Guide to Private Touring in Britain

If this is your first time booking a private tour rather than a group coach trip, a few practical questions tend to come up. Here's a straightforward, no-sales-pitch look at them.

How far ahead should you book?

As soon as your dates are firm, particularly in peak season — spring through early autumn — when the most popular days fill up first. We'll always try to accommodate shorter-notice requests, but early enquiries simply have more options to choose from.

Do you need to tip your guide?

Britain doesn't have the strong, near-obligatory tipping culture you might be used to elsewhere. A tip for a private guide or driver is a genuine thank-you for a day well spent, not an expected top-up on the price — so there's no need to feel awkward either way, and no fixed percentage you're expected to hit.

What should you wear?

British weather is famously changeable, sometimes within the same afternoon, so layers and a compact waterproof are more useful than any specific outfit. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than they might seem — even a relaxed private day usually involves more walking than people expect, and some sites (Stonehenge among them) are on genuinely exposed, open ground.

What's included, and what isn't?

A private tour includes your guide and vehicle for the day, planned entirely around your itinerary. Where a destination charges an entry fee, we can include tickets as part of your quote so nothing needs arranging on the day. Meals aren't automatically included, but we're happy to build in a lunch stop, or point you toward somewhere good near your route, if you'd like.

Questions worth asking any tour operator

• What happens if the weather turns, or if your ship, flight, or train is delayed?
• Is the price a genuine per-day quote, or are there extra charges added later?
• Will you be sharing the vehicle with another group, or is it private to yours alone?
• How much can the itinerary flex once the day is under way?
