Morning: Castle Combe

We like to start here while the village is quiet. Often described as one of the prettiest villages in England, Castle Combe has no overhead cables or satellite dishes visible in its historic core — a look preserved carefully enough that it's been used as a filming location more than once, including the 1967 Doctor Dolittle and, more recently, War Horse. A market cross, a 13th-century church, and a stream crossed by a stone bridge are all within a few minutes' walk of each other, which makes it an easy, unhurried start to the day.

Midday: the wider Cotswolds

From Castle Combe, the day can open out into the wider Cotswolds landscape — market towns, working farmland, and centuries-old wool churches funded by the region's historic wool trade, which is what paid for the golden stone architecture the area is known for today.
